The following import conditions apply to animals in category 6:

IMPORTANT! Animals imported to Norway from rabies infected non-EU/EFTA countries must complete a quarantine period of minimum 4 months after arrival in Norway and must be registered with the District Veterinary Officer responsible for the quarantine facilities minimum 30 days prior to importation. Contact the Norwegian Animal Health Authority - District Veterinary Officer for Mysen and Spydeberg, P. O. Box 228, N-1851 Mysen. Phone: +47 69 89 36 10 Fax: +47 69 89 24 80

1. VETERINARY CERTIFICATE The animal must be accompanied by a Veterinary Certificate approved by the Norwegian Animal Health Authority - Central Unit. The Veterinary Certificate is twofold and consists of part I, the Health Certificate, and part II, the Vaccination Certificate. Both parts must be signed by an authorised veterinarian. The certificate shall confirm that the import requirements are fulfilled.

The Health Certificate must be signed by an authorised veterinarian within 10 days prior to importation to Norway. The Health Certificate is a certification that the animal does not show clinical signs of any contagious or infectious disease and that treatment against Echinococcus multilocularis (tapeworm) has been completed. During the first 7 days after arrival in Norway the animal must be retreated by an authorised veterinarian.

The Vaccination Certificate must be filled in and signed by an authorised veterinarian based upon information given in original vaccination and laboratory certificates. The Vaccination Certificate is valid as long as the vaccination status of the animal or the blood test is valid.

The following vaccines and/or blood tests must be documented on the Vaccination Certificate:

A. Leptospirosis (applies only to dogs)
The dog must be vaccinated with an approved vaccine within 365 days prior to importation to Norway. Alternatively, the dog may be tested serologically with a microscopic agglutination test (MAT) for leptospirosis. The blood sample must be drawn within 21 days prior to importation. The result of the test must show less than 50% agglutination at a dilution of 1:30 for an unvaccinated dog, or less than 50% agglutination at a dilution of 1:300 for a previously vaccinated dog.

B. Canine Distemper (applies only to dogs)
The dog must be vaccinated with an approved vaccine within 730 days prior to importation to Norway. Note for points 1A and 1B: After basic immunisation or after exceeded re-vaccination interval the dog must wait 30 days before importation to Norway. If the dog receives two or more vaccine shots upon basic immunisation, the 30 day limit applies to the first vaccination date. The 30 day limit does not apply to dogs that have been re-vaccinated against leptospirosis within 365 days and against canine distemper within 730 days after the last vaccination.

C. Brucellosis (applies only to dogs)
Dogs must be tested serologically for brucellosis (Brucella canis) with a negative result prior to importation. The blood sample must be drawn within 21 days prior to importation.

D. Rabies
Rabies vaccination is not required for animals that must complete a period of quarantine in Norway. Animals vaccinated against rabies may not be imported before a minimum of 30 days has passed since vaccination. The animal must not have been vaccinated with a live vaccine during 24 months prior to importation.

2. IDENTIFICATION The animal must be identified with a readable tattoo or microchip implant. The identification number must be referred to on all vaccination certificates or vaccination book and on laboratory certificates. The identification number must also be referred to on the approved Veterinary Certificate. If the microchip is not of FECAVA or ISO standard, the animal owner must provide a compatible reader.

3. BORDER CONTROL
Upon arrival at the border control post the animal and the required documents will be examined by a District Veterinary Officer. The importer must give 48 hours prior notice about time and place of arrival to the District Veterinary Officer responsible for the border control post.

4. QUARANTINE
Animals imported to Norway from rabies infected non-EU/EFTA regions must complete a period of minimum 4 months quarantine at a quarantine facility approved by the Norwegian Animal Health Authority - Central Unit. After release from quarantine the animal will be required to be held isolated at home for another 2 months.

Exception: Norwegian service dogs in active service and guide dogs in active service for a blind person are exempt from the quarantine requirement. These dogs must alternatively fulfil the rabies vaccine and blood test requirement that animals from rabies infected EU/EFTA countries must fulfil (see category 4).

The importer must minimum 30 days prior to planned import date register the animal with the District Veterinary Officer responsible for the quarantine facilities (see address and telephone above). The importer must also minimum 30 days prior to planned import reserve place at the quarantine facility directly with the owner of the quarantine.

There is only one approved quarantine facility in Norway for dogs and cats. Vestberg Quarantine Station, Nordre Linderudsvei 45, N-1816 Skiptvet, Norway. Phone: 47 69 80 85 80 Fax: 47 69 80 85 90.

The Quarantine Station requires that dogs are vaccinated against Kennel cough and canine parvovirus infection and cats are vaccinated against feline viral rhinotracheitis and feline calicivirus infection a minimum of 3 weeks before they arrive at the quarantine station.
