Remember that other countries may have import regulations that defer from these. Contact the applicable country's embassy before embarking upon international travel with your pet. Dogs and cats imported to Norway must fulfil requirements as described in one of six categories.

Category1: Importation from Sweden and reindeer herd dogs from Finland used in accordance with the reindeer grazing agreement.
Category2: Importation of Norwegian and Swedish animals after transit through Finland.
Category3: Importation from rabies free EU/EFTA-countries.
Category4: Importation from rabies infected EU/EFTA-countries and the Norwegian territories of Svalbard and Jan Mayen.
Category5: Importation from rabies free non-EU/EFTA-countries.
Category6: Importation from rabies infected non-EU/EFTA-countries.

General information Dogs and cats imported to Norway under categories 3 - 6 must present upon border control to Norway a Veterinary Certificate approved by The Norwegian Animal Health Authority - Central Unit. The Veterinary Certificate is twofold. It consists of part I, a Health Certificate and part II, a Vaccination Certificate. The certificate is available from Regional and District Veterinary Officers in The Norwegian Animal Health Authority or through your local veterinarian. The Veterinary Certificate must ascertain that the import requirements are fulfilled and must be signed by an authorised veterinarian. The import requirements vary according to the importation category.

The Veterinary Certificate presented upon border control must be an original certificate (not a fax copy or copy). The Health Certificate may not be issued more than 10 days prior to arrival, while the Vaccination Certificate is valid according to the animals vaccination or blood test status.

The person who has the animal in his/her keeping upon arrival at the Norwegian border post is responsible for presenting the required documents and the animal to the customs authorities. The Veterinary Certificate must be kept for at least 1 year or in case of a shorter stay as long as the animal is in Norway. If requirements for importation are not fulfilled the Norwegian Animal Health Authority - District veterinarian may pass a decision to expel, isolate or euthanatise the animal. Any expenditure incurred in connection with the importation is not a public authority concern.

NOTE: For dogs and cats that do not fulfil requirements in any of the categories 1 through 6, an application for an import permit must be sent to the Norwegian Animal Health Authority - Regional Veterinary Officer.

Security Clause The Norwegian Animal Health Authority - Central Unit, may upon short notice and without compensation to the importer prohibit importation of dogs and cats if circumstances in the country of despatch or other require such action.

The following is detailed information on the conditions for importation of dogs and cats to Norway. Import conditions must be in accordance with Norwegian regulations as laid down in the regulation of 3 September 1998 on Animal Health Conditions for Importation of Dogs and Cats to Norway. The regulation is effective from 1 October 1998 and is available (in Norwegian) from the Norwegian Animal Health Authority or on the Internet at: www.lovdata.no

ATTENTION! Importation to Norway of dogs of the following breeds (pure-bred or crosses) is prohibited; Pit Bull Terrier, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu and Dogo Argentino. For breeds that may be confused with any of the above mentioned breeds, e.g. American Staffordshire Terrier, it must be possible to document with an original pedigree certificate and ID-number that the animal is not an offspring of prohibited breeds.
